From Dartmoor to the Polar Regions: Preparing Scientists for Fieldwork

Participants and training team · Clean Planet Peninsula fieldwork training, Dartmoor, August 2023.

Antony helped deliver the Clean Planet Peninsula fieldwork training on Dartmoor in 2023 and 2024, supporting early-career scientists preparing for polar research.

The challenge

Scientific expertise needs practical preparation alongside it. Researchers heading into remote environments must also be ready to navigate, live in the field and work effectively as a team.

Antony’s role

The 2023 pilot was delivered with the UK Polar Network. The Foundation identifies Antony as lead instructor for the 2024 course, bringing his polar expedition experience into the programme.

Learning in the field

Navigation, campcraft, leadership and teamwork were combined with specialist sessions from the wider training team. Dartmoor’s rain, wind and poor visibility provided demanding practice conditions.

Participant perspective

The Foundation’s 2024 review includes a participant reporting greater confidence in preparing for polar research following the leadership and teamwork exercises.

What people say

Experience that creates impact.

“Antony joined Everoze as a keynote speaker for our 2026 full company get together. We were looking for someone that could transport the team away from their every day industry thinking and give a fresh perspective on what it means to be inspired to run towards big challenges to achieve big goals. Antony was able to do this while captivating the audience with his stories—resonating with the human and planet based values of our teams and with a fresh reminder of our core motivations. He then stayed with us for 2 leadership workshop sessions to further deep-dive on the delivery side of working as individuals and as a team. It was a fantastic experience for us and we are all really grateful for Antony's time and careful consideration of what we were trying to achieve. Highly recommended!”

“We were delighted to welcome Antony to our M&S inspiring speakers series. He had over 400 managers participating digitally via Teams. Antony shared inspirational journeys of his achievement across the North and South pole. His honest reflections on personal struggles and mindset to overcome these were very inspiring and helped all colleagues reflect on leadership traits that are applicable in the world of business, as much as his arctic exploring. Antony touched on everything from active listening, to stopping and course correcting, the importance of feedback but also the importance of remembering to take a moment and recognise your achievements as well as reflect on how your behaviour and mood impacts others. These were delivered through great story telling, as well as some funny anecdotes on human behaviours when you're living on ice.”

“Antony Jinman has successfully created innovative experiences for children and young people that extend and enhance their exposure to the national curriculum. The opportunities they have to engage in, often in real time, with global explorers, adds excitement and insight into how learning can be. Accessing the science and technology agenda through ETE adds an extra dimension in schools. Antony strives to be at the heart of his work in this field and is, himself, a positive role model for young people who are trying to make a difference.”
